PR INTERNSHIP

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the PR team members with project management activities including media tracking, media clipping, reports, editorial calendar management and research
  • Develop press releases, media alerts, media lists and pitches
  • Develop media briefs and itineraries
  • Select media pitching, once messaging is approved by senior team members
  • Select client activities, attend client meetings, events and/or presentations as available and
  • approved by senior team members
  • Begin to understand and gain familiarity in client-related industries, including competitor analysis,
  • industry trends and key media outlets
  • Begin to understand and gain familiarity with agency best practices
  • Understand and utilize public relations databases and programs to the fullest extent needed
  • Begin to develop an understanding of media contacts within the clients’ industries

 

Qualifications

  • This internship is specifically for students who are currently earning their degree
  • Must be available to commit to a minimum of 15 hours per week for the spring and fall semester internships. Must be available to commit to a minimum of 20 hours per week for the summer internship.
  • Familiar with AP-style
  • A general understanding of the public relations industry
  • Ideal candidates have experience in a communications, journalism, public relations or English program; possess strong attention to detail and writing skills; and enthusiasm for the public relations industry.
  • Public relations-specific writing experience, prior internship experience and social media skills are a plus!

  • Physical requirements: computer work, sitting for long periods of time
  • Strong inter/intrapersonal communications skills

 

12 Week Learning Cycle

*Please note that the learning cycle is meant to help the intern meet educational milestones and guide the internship. There is the possibility that this may alter based on client needs, individual intern’s progression, etc.

  • Week 1 – Gain knowledge about client accounts, your roles, office training, PR tools and media clipping
  • Week 2 – Continue to gain knowledge about client accounts, your roles, office training, PR tools and media clipping. Send internship goals to manager.
  • Week 3 – Drafting media briefs and itineraries
  • Week 4 – Media list building
  • Week 5 – Drafting a calendar/media alert
  • Week 6 – Drafting a pitch. Midway coaching session.
  • Week 7 – Drafting an announcement/press release. Department meet & greets.
  • Week 8 – Full media outreach project – draft media materials, media list and pitch. Send pitch.
  • Week 9 – Strategy development. Continue to work on projects as they’re available and work towards completing your internship goals.
  • Week 10 – Implement strategy. Continue to work on projects as they’re available and work towards completing your internship goals.
  • Week 11 – Implement strategy. Continue to work on projects as they’re available and work towards completing your internship goals.
  • Week 12 – Implement strategy. Continue to work on projects as they’re available and work towards completing your internship goals.
